Infrastructure of Survival: Resilient Design in the Age of Climate Change
Authors: Sakthidoss, D.
| Open Access |
This chapter proposes a transformative shift in understanding infrastructure in the context of climate change. It argues for reconceptualizing infrastructure as ‘systems of survival’ that enable societies to endure, adapt, and transform in the face of environmental disruptions. The chapter critiques conventional development paradigms that prioritize economic growth over ecological sustainability and social equity. Instead, it advocates for a holistic approach that integrates ecological sensitivity, participatory governance, and social justice into infrastructure design and purpose. The chapter emphasizes that resilient infrastructure is not just about technical robustness, but also about addressing power dynamics, access, and justice in the face of climate challenges. It calls for an interdisciplinary perspective that views infrastructure as a foundation for creating more equitable, sustainable, and resilient futures.
