Authors: Jesline Maria Martin Mamen
| Open Access |
This paper explores the science of flourishing within positive psychology, shifting focus from mental illness to optimal human functioning. It discusses the evolution from happiness to flourishing as a holistic concept encompassing emotional, psychological, and social well-being. The paper outlines key theoretical models of flourishing, including those by Keyes, Huppert and So, Diener et al., Seligman, Ryff and Singer, and VanderWeele. It examines evidence-based interventions promoting flourishing, such as gratitude journaling, character strength exercises, and mindfulness practices. The paper also highlights cultural applications, particularly in India, where concepts like ananda (joy) and dharma (purpose) align with flourishing principles. It emphasizes the importance of embedding flourishing in education, healthcare, and policy for sustainable well-being. The conclusion underscores flourishing as both an individual aspiration and a collective imperative, calling for interdisciplinary collaboration to create conditions for human thriving in the face of global challenges.
