Publication and Citation Trend Analyzer

The Publication and Citation Trend Analyzer is designed to support bibliometric-based systematic literature reviews under the BRISE Framework (Bibliometric Research Integration and Synthesis Engine). By processing bibliographic datasets exported from Scopus, OpenAlex, Web of Science, and similar databases, the tool automatically generates publication and citation trends, growth indicators, and field maturity assessments. The resulting visualizations and metrics help researchers understand the evolution of a research domain, identify periods of rapid expansion, and establish the developmental trajectory of the literature. Outputs generated by this module can be directly incorporated into the Results section of review papers, doctoral theses, and bibliometric studies.

Understanding the Generated Indicators

Total Publications
Represents the total number of scholarly documents included in the dataset. This indicator reflects the overall size and productivity of the research domain.

Total Citations
Represents the cumulative citations received by all publications in the dataset. Higher values generally indicate greater scholarly visibility and influence.

Average Citations per Article
Calculated as Total Citations divided by Total Publications. This metric provides a preliminary indication of the average scholarly impact of published works within the field.

Peak Publication Year
Identifies the year with the highest number of published documents. This often corresponds to periods of heightened academic attention and rapid field development.

Peak Citation Year
Identifies the year generating the highest citation volume. This may indicate the emergence of influential studies, landmark publications, or increased recognition of the research area.

Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR)
Measures the average annual growth of publication output across the selected time period. Higher CAGR values suggest accelerated development and increasing scholarly engagement.

Research Maturity Stage
Provides a broad assessment of the developmental status of the research field based on publication growth patterns.

  • Emerging: Early-stage field with limited publication activity.
  • Growing: Consistent increase in scholarly output and expanding research interest.
  • Mature: Established domain with substantial publication volume and stable growth.
  • Saturation: Growth has plateaued, indicating a highly developed and extensively explored field.

Sample Interpretation:

“The publication trend demonstrates a substantial increase in scholarly output over the study period, indicating growing academic interest in the field. Citation patterns reveal increasing recognition of published works, while the calculated CAGR suggests a growing/mature research domain. The observed trajectory indicates that the field has progressed from an emerging stage toward a more established body of knowledge.”
